Warning: Proud parent moment. So Chase joined cross country this year. As if he didn't have enough going on with soccer, choir, and violin. All his choice. Anyway, it's pretty low-key. They practice a few mornings a week and only have two meets. One was a few weeks ago. A mile run against all the 4th and 5th grade boys in the school. He came in 2nd place with a 6:21 mile time! We were so proud of him. I was holding back tears. It was ridiculous. When in the world did my kid get so fast? He outruns me now! Not that I'm super fast but I ain't slow either.
So today was his second and final meet. A mile again, this time between 19 schools, and divided by grade. So he ran with only 4th graders. We knew he would do well. We knew he was fast. But we also knew there were a LOT of kids and highly likely many other fast ones. Also, he hurt his knee yesterday and iced it all night and this morning. It was hurting him. He was worried it would hinder his running. And he was really nervous. We prayed and trusted that all would be well.
The gun shot rang. Runners were off. My heart started pumping. He fought his way through the crowd towards the front. Held his pace for a while then slowly started making his way past people. 5th place. 4th place. 3rd place. 2nd! For most of the second half of the race he was neck and neck with the leader. They kept switching places. On one corner he slipped and fell but got right back up and kept going. Heading towards the finish he later told me "I couldn't feel my hands or feet or legs, so I just figured I would give it all I got". Elbow to elbow he and the other boy were sprinting to the finish. 20 ft before the line the boy tripped and fell, which caused chase to trip and fall. He rolled on the track and sat there for a second, dazed and out of it. I started screaming "get up! Get up! You're almost there! Get up!" Both boys got up and dashed towards the line.....First place!!!! I wanted to cry and scream and jump up and down "did you see that?! Did you see that?! That's my kid! That's my kid!" (I didn't though). A bag of emotions swept over me. Both Rick and I were beaming with pride. A hurt knee, nervous pit in his stomach, and 2 falls....but he still did it! Didn't let it get him down. He's one special kid.
And we have to give thanks to God because he said his knee didn't hurt once during the race. Thank you Lord for answered prayers.
Since most of the kids were farther back, they came up to chase afterwards asking how he did? When he answered "I got first" they were all blown away. It was so cute watching them all surround him and congratulate him.
